Based on the original book and concept of the same name by Peter Stone, the musical is a send-up of backstage murder mystery plots. Set in 1959 Boston, Massachusetts, it follows the fallout when Jessica Cranshaw, the supremely untalented star of Robbin' Hood of the Old West is murdered during her opening night curtain call. It is up to Lt. Frank Cioffi, a police detective who moonlights as a musical theatre fan, to save the show, solve the case, and maybe even find love before the show reopens, without getting killed himself. Cioffi also dreams of being in musical theatre.
May 2026....Murder at the Opera...!
For the production in May 2026, we are doing another devised show written by Simon Gray and Karen Hudson. We return to South Hamwick and the all the wonderful characters we created in "Oh Yes We Can!" plus, of course, some new ones. The very basic idea at the moment is: A former resident of South Hamwick, who is a well-known opera singer, returns to her hometown, so the WI decide to put on an opera in her honour. As yet, we are not sure which opera it will be! The actual storyline and plot is still being worked on but the show will feature an audition section, casting, disappointments and celebrations, rehearsals, crazy characters, shady characters and, of course as the title suggests, a murder. Who gets murdered? We don't know yet! But a "Vera" type detective shows up to try and solve the crime. As with the previous show, there will be sub-plots, and we are aiming for lots of laughs!
